His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee and Senior Vice President of the Association of National Olympic Committees, attended the opening of the 45th General Assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia in Kuwait City. The event took place at the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Centre and brought together representatives from 45 National Olympic Committees, highlighting the diversity of Asian sport.
Sheikh Joaan’s presence emphasized Qatar’s growing influence in global sports and its active leadership in the Olympic movement. Hosted by the Kuwait Olympic Committee, the opening featured speeches, a cultural performance, and a dinner for delegates. One of the keynote speakers was IOC President Dr. Thomas Bach, who delivered one of his final addresses before stepping down in June.
A special moment came when Team Qatar’s high jump icon, Mutaz Barshim, addressed the assembly. A four-time Olympian, Barshim spoke about his journey and how sport fosters opportunity, unity, and national pride.
The event also highlighted Qatar’s preparations for the 21st Asian Games, which Doha will host in 2030. Known as the sporting capital of the world, Doha continues to lead efforts in promoting athletic excellence and expanding opportunities for athletes across Asia.
