Gesture Highlights Football’s Global Unity Ahead of 2026 Tournament
During a state banquet at Lusail Palace on May 14, 2025, the Amir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, presented a commemorative football from the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 to former U.S. President Donald Trump, who was visiting Qatar on an official state visit.
The symbolic gesture underscores the transition from one historic World Cup to another, as the United States, Canada, and Mexico prepare to co-host the FIFA World Cup 2026—the first edition to feature 48 teams across multiple North American cities.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino was also in attendance and later shared photos from the event on his Instagram account, stating:
“In 2022, everyone present felt Qatar’s warmth and hospitality as the tournament brought cultures and people from all over the world together, uniting them through our beautiful game.
No doubt this will also be the case across all host countries in 2026. It’s clear to see that football unites people, unites countries, and unites the world.”
One striking image from the evening shows President Trump holding the autographed World Cup ball, with Sheikh Tamim and Infantino looking on—a moment rich in symbolism for football diplomacy and global sporting collaboration.
The legacy of Qatar 2022, praised for its fan experience, world-class infrastructure, and seamless international coordination, sets a high bar for the upcoming tournament. With the clock ticking toward 2026, the baton has officially been passed.
