The Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) took part in the main session of the FIBA Congress held in Bahrain, which included representatives from 180 national federations.
The QBF delegation was led by its President and Director General of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027 Organizing Committee, Mohammed Saad Al Meghaiseeb. He was joined by QBF Secretary General Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari and Director of Strategic Planning at the World Cup Organizing Committee, Fahad Jum.
During the session, FIBA President Sheikh Saud bin Ali Al-Thani highlighted the Congress as a key platform for coordinating the future direction of basketball and called for collective efforts to move the sport forward.
FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis discussed current global challenges facing the sport and outlined plans focused on development, support for national federations, and broader international engagement.
The FIBA Central Board presented updates on the preparations for the 2026 Women's World Cup in Germany and the 2027 Men's World Cup in Qatar. It also approved the bidding processes for upcoming editions. The process for the 2030 Women’s World Cup is scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2025, with the host expected to be confirmed by the end of that year. The bidding for the 2031 Men’s World Cup will begin in the final quarter of 2025, with a decision expected in 2026.
Commenting on the session, Al Meghaiseeb said it offered a space for federations to exchange knowledge and discuss collaboration. He added that Bahrain’s hosting of the Congress demonstrates the region’s commitment to supporting global basketball and that Qatar continues to prepare for the 2027 World Cup through regional engagement and international cooperation.
He also noted that the Congress participants acknowledged Qatar’s recent organization of the Qualifiers Draw for the 2027 World Cup, held in Doha.
