Qatar open their campaign in the decisive stage of the AFC Asian Qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a crucial clash against Oman today at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. Head coach Julen Lopetegui has urged his players to stay mentally sharp and give everything as they begin their push to reach football’s biggest stage.

This marks Qatar’s opening Group A match in the play-off round — the fourth stage of qualification. The Maroons aim to start strong with a win before facing the UAE on October 14. Group B features Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Indonesia. Both groups will play in a single round-robin format, with the top team in each group earning direct qualification. The runners-up will meet in a two-legged play-off next month for a spot in the FIFA Play-Off Tournament, where one final World Cup berth awaits.

Qatar, who made their World Cup debut as hosts in 2022, have never qualified through the standard process. Lopetegui, who succeeded Luis Garcia earlier this year, said determination will be vital to changing that history. “We are entering a decisive and pivotal phase with two crucial matches that demand the highest levels of focus. Our dream of reaching the World Cup can only be achieved through complete commitment and effort,” he said during his pre-match press conference.

The Spaniard, a former Real Madrid and Spain coach, has refreshed his squad for this round, recalling veteran Al Sadd forward Hassan Al Haydos from retirement and adding midfielder Guilherme Torres. However, consistency remains a concern following recent setbacks — defeats to Lebanon and Russia and a draw with Bahrain.

Top scorer Almoez Ali missed those matches through injury, and Lopetegui hinted that his lineup for tonight’s game remains undecided, with Akram Afif expected to play a leading role. “We must assess the players’ readiness before choosing the best lineup for this important opener,” he said.

Oman, led by seasoned coach Carlos Queiroz — himself a former Qatar boss — will present a formidable challenge. “We respect Oman and their coach. They are a strong, disciplined side and we must be at our best,” Lopetegui acknowledged.

Qatar defender Boualem Khoukhi voiced confidence ahead of the match. “We know it will be a tough game, but our morale is high and we are ready to give everything for victory,” he said. He emphasized the importance of fan support, adding, “Their presence will be a big motivation for us. We promise to fight for three points and make our supporters proud.”

In a surprise development, veteran striker Sebastian Soria, 41, trained with the team yesterday, prompting speculation of a possible return after eight years away from the national side.

Kick-off is scheduled for 6 PM at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.
