Tunisia kicked off their AFCON 2025 campaign in emphatic fashion, ending a 12-year wait for an opening-game victory with a convincing 3–1 win over Uganda in Group C. Led by a brilliant Elias Achouri brace, the Eagles of Carthage delivered a performance that underlined their attacking intent and tournament ambitions.

From the opening minutes, Tunisia imposed themselves with tactical authority and sharp offensive play. Despite Uganda enjoying slightly more possession, the North Africans were far more incisive, dictating the tempo and consistently threatening in the final third.

The breakthrough came early when Ellyes Skhiri rose highest to head home from a corner in the 10th minute. Tunisia doubled their advantage before the break through Achouri, who finished clinically after a well-worked move involving Ali Al-Abdi. The winger struck again in the 64th minute, capitalising on a goalkeeping error by Salim Magoola to seal the result and cap a standout individual display.

Uganda attempted to respond after halftime, with coach Paul Put introducing Travis Mutyaba and Denis Omedi to add attacking spark. While the changes brought more energy, Tunisia’s defensive organisation proved too solid. Omedi eventually pulled one back in stoppage time, but it was little more than a consolation in a match largely controlled by the Eagles of Carthage.

The victory sends Tunisia to the top of Group C on goal difference, ahead of Nigeria, who also opened their campaign with a win against Tanzania. Sami Trabelsi’s side now turns its attention to a highly anticipated clash with Nigeria in Fes, while Uganda must regroup quickly before facing Tanzania in a crucial derby in Rabat.

Tunisia’s opening performance at AFCON 2025 was a clear statement: blending discipline, efficiency, and attacking quality, the Eagles of Carthage have announced themselves as serious contenders in this year’s tournament.
