Aspire Zone Foundation is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Khalifa International Stadium, marking five decades of a landmark that has played a central role in Qatar’s sporting development.

Opened in 1976, the stadium has welcomed leading athletes and national teams from around the world, hosting major competitions and becoming an enduring symbol of the country’s sporting heritage.

Its inauguration coincided with the fourth Arabian Gulf Cup in 1976. In 1992, it provided the stage for one of Qatar’s most memorable sporting achievements as the national team lifted the Arabian Gulf Cup title for the first time.

The stadium later hosted competitions during the Doha 2006 Asian Games and served as a key venue for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup, including the final.

In 2019, it hosted the World Athletics Championships as the event came to the Middle East for the first time. Three years later, it staged eight matches during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, including the third-place playoff. It also welcomed matches during the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2021 and the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023.

The anniversary celebrates the moments, athletes and achievements that have shaped the stadium’s history, while highlighting its continuing contribution to Qatar’s position as a leading destination for international sport.

Aspire Zone Foundation aims to build on this legacy, supporting the continued development of sport and Qatar’s vision for a sustainable sporting future.
